Obituary

Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser (Qld. : 1860 - 1947), Wed 18 Oct 1916, Page 5 IN MEMORIAM MRS. CATHERINE LOWRY. (By a Friend.) A gloom was cast over the district when it was known that Mrs Catherine Lowry, the wife of Mr. Patrick Lowry, Killina farm, Degilbo, had passed away to the great unknown. The deceased was respected by all who knew her. Kindness and sterling worth, and willingness to help in every case of distress, and many persons realised the sentiment so well expressed by the poet when he wrote : I could not choose but sigh sad tears will, flow When, some shall know those flags were half-mast-high." The late Mrs Lowry was a fine specimen of Australian womanhood, and a typical pioneer and battler, who had braved all the hardships, dangers, and discomforts of the bush when working hard with her husband to make a home on the land. And no day was too long, and no work was too hard to help her six children, whom she loved dearly, and her last words to her husband were, 'Be good to the children, Pat". The deceased was born in Toowoomba, and was 49 years of age, and was a daughter of the late William O'Leary; who for many years carried on business near Gympie as hotel-keeper and butcher, and latterly, was in business at storekeeper in Gundiah. The passing away of Catherine Lowry has caused a gap not only in the family circle, but outside of it, that may never be filled, and her soul will rest in, peace beyond the clouds and beyond the tomb.
