Biography

Family

Elizabeth was born about 1625. She was the daughter and coheir of John Owfield, Esq., Merchant of London. Though her baptismal record has not been located, her relationship has been confirmed through the probate of her father, in which he states the following, "to my daughter Elizabeth Cowper my house at Bow &c., and, for her maintenance, the lease of the sugar house at Biliter Lane, London, which is clear forty pounds per annum."[1]

Marriage & Issue

She married George Cooper c. July 1647. Their marriage license has not yet been identified, but their relationship is confirmed through the will of her father John Owfield.[2][3][4] Later in the bequests, John names his "son George Cowper, Esq. to be my Executor."[1] They had two sons and six daughters:

  1. Elizabeth Cooper
  2. Catherine Cooper
  3. Margaret Cooper
  4. John Cooper
  5. George Cooper

Death & Probate

Research Notes

This profile was previously connected as the daughter of John Owfeild son of Unknown Owfield. However, this family was subject to generational conflation, and has been shifted accordingly. The descent for this profile now reads Elizabeth -> John -> John -> Unnamed Owfield. S. Grimaldi 2022MAR091013CST

Evidence suggests she is a sister of Roger Owfield, although when considering the evidence regarding dates it is more likely she is a sibling of the younger Roger Owfield and a daughter of John Owfield a son of Roger Owfield and Thomasine Moore. Concerning this previous research note, with the generational conflation corrected, Elizabeth is a daughter of John Owfield. Additionally, Roger Owfield and Thomasine Moore of Biliter Lane, London, did not have a son named John Owfield. More research is needed to determine if this is the correct family assignation. S. Grimaldi 2022MAR091015CST

She is not the same Elizabeth who married Lawrence Sweetman Esq of Somerford.

Oldfield-811 and Owfield-21 appear to represent the same person because: The evidence supports these two individuals being the same person.

Owfield-21 and Oldfield-96 appear to represent the same person because: The surname Owfield had many spellings and it became Oldfield later on. Most early records including her uncle's will were spelt Owfield.
Oldfield-2 matches with this, but the information is mixed.
