Sidede Onyulo was born in Kenya

Sidede Onyulo was one of Kenya’s earliest and best-known actors, most famous for his role as the cook, Owour, in the 2001 Oscar-winning film Nowhere in Africa.

Sidede was born in 1955 in Kajulu, Nyanza, Kenya. He was son of former Winam MP Nathaniel Onyulo Otene and Winfred Odongo Oyulo.

Sidede attended Muthaiga Primary School between 1965-1968, and studied his A-levels in Nairobi School, where he headed Scott House dormitory in 1974. While a student at Nairobi School, Sidede was enlisted to participate as Jero in the Wole Soyinka play Trials of Brother Jero - a role that would set him on the path to his destiny as a Kenyan thespian. In 1974, he performed his first major theatrical role in Francis Imbuga’s Betrayal in the City, before it was published.

Sidede studied law at the Kenya School of Law at the University of Nairobi between 1975-1978. But his passion always remained the theater. In 1977, he performed in The Trial of Dedan Kimathi and again in Betrayal in the City, which were presented during the All-Africa Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in Lagos, Nigeria. Finally, in 1979, he gave up practicing law to fully embrace theatre.

Sidede made his film debut in 1988, with a role as a houseboy in the TV miniseries, Beryl Markham: A Shadow on the Sun. Other television films included Ivory Hunters and Eyes of a Witness. In 2001, he appeared in the Academy Award winning German film, Nowhere in Africa, for which he won the Best Supporting Actor award at the Dublin Film Festival. In 2004, he appeared with actor Patrick Swazy in the two-part television miniseries, King Solomon's Mines. His final film was The Constant Gardener in 2005.

Sidede also lent his talent to television series like Heart and Soul and the anti-FGM (female genital mutilation) Swahili documentary Price of a Daughter.

In late-April 2008, Sidede fell sick while at his rural home at the foot of Kajulu hills and was rushed to a private hospital and died a week later. He takes to the grave a rich talent. His nephew, Mr Silas Otieno said Sidede would be buried at his home in Kajulu.

Twice-married, Sidede left behind three children. [In 2003, his then-current wife was identified as Helen Akinyi, who worked in a beauty salon to help support the couple's two children while her husband was between roles - in part due to the fact that most film producers would not pay him what he felt he was worth and in part because he had a very well document fondness for alcohol.][1]
