Dr. Thomas Kittredge studied medicine in Newburyport and then settled in Andover. He was surgeon to Col. James Frye’s regiment during the Revolution and was at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He served in the Massachusetts legislature and was an early member of the Massachusetts medical society.[7]
Susanna and Thomas’s sons John and Joseph followed in the medical tradition of the family. Granddaughter Maria Susanna Cummins (daughter of Maria and David Cummins) was author of The Lamplighter published in 1854, a best-selling novel of the era.
Thomas Kittredge did not leave a will and on 4 December 1818, the following heirs petitioned requesting that William Johnson be named administrator: widow Susannah, John Kittredge, Lemuel LeBarron, D. Cummins, and Joseph Kittredge. Those signing as witnesses to this document were Susan Kittredge, Martha LeBarron, Catherine Cummins, and Maria F. Kittredge. William Johnson was named administrator 5 January 1819. Thomas had an extensive estate with real estate valued at $16,208. This included the main house with outbuildings on 20 acres valued at $6,500, tavern house on five acres valued at $3,000, the “old house” at $850, a mill house with nine acres at $650, and several other lots of land. There was $4,650 in bank stock. Numerous notes were due the estate and the total value of the personal estate was $17,221.35 for a total estate value of $33,429.35.[8]
Susanna Kittredge did not leave a will and on 5 May 1840, the following heirs-at-law requested that Francis Cummins be named administrator: D. Cummins, Thomas Kittredge, William LeBaron, and Joseph W. Kittredge. Susanna had no real estate and personal estate was valued at $7,112.51, all but a cow valued at $25 in the form of bank notes, cash, and notes due the estate.[9]
