This profile is a collaborative work-in-progress. Can you contribute information or sources? Recent research has helped to solidify the identity of many of those enslaved by Robert Owen, and bequeathed to his son Philemon Owen.

Jefferson was born about 1825. Note in the 1850 appraisal of the estate of Robert Owen, he was appraised as a fellow age 25 - $900. Robert's children born about same time were born in Georgia. This is likely where Jefferson was born.

Robert's will first bequeathed Jefferson to Robert Owen's wife Mary, after whose death Jefferson was to go to Robert and Mary's son Philemon Owen in Chambers County, Alabama.[1]

Jefferson had been enslaved by Robert Owen and was named in his probate files.

Robert Owen and his family were recorded living in Chambers County, Alabama in 1840. It is likely that Jefferson was residing there as well.[2]

Though Robert's main residence continued to be recorded in Chambers County, Alabama, in the early 1840's he purchased land in Lee County that would later become Macon County, Alabama. In his Chambers County, probate file, the administrators of his estate requested permission to sell 70 acres from Section 2, Township 19, Range 24 in what was then Macon County. Note this was south east of his holdings in Chambers County, Alabama. Below are his land records relevant to this.

Robert Owen, the last four fields are

Meridian Township Range Section
18 May 1841: Lee, Alabama: St Stephens: 020n: 024E: 36
18 May 1841: Lee, Alabama: St Stephens: 020n: 025E: 31
18 Aug 1841: Lee, Alabama: St Stephens: 020n: 025E: 28
13 Apr 1842: Lee, Alabama: St Stephens: 019n: 024E: 2
13 Apr 1842: Lee, Alabama: St Stephens: 019n: 024E: 3
24 Nov 1848: Lee, Alabama: St Stephens: 019n: 025E: 7

Note at the time of his probate some of his adult children had already moved to Macon County.

In the 1850 census Robert (age 68), Farmer, was in District 19, Chambers, Alabama, United States. It is likely that Jefferson resided there as well.[3]

Robert died between the signing of the codicil of his will on 23 May 1850 and his probate.[4]

The will of Robert Owen included the following:

Item 3d. At the death of my wife Mary Owen, I will and bequeath unto my son Philemon Owen the following named negroes and their increase from this time, to wit: Governor, William, Hal, Daniel, Angeline, Horace, Ben, Frank, Randal, Jane, Jefferson, Gilford and Nelson. I also give to him the following described land viz: all of section twenty one (21) in township twenty (20) and Range twenty five (25). Also the south half of section twenty two (22) in same township and range, all lying in this County, and to be his absolute property at the death of my wife.

Philemon signed for receiving his inheritance in 1856. It was stated at that time that Jane and Jefferson had already died.
