Biography

Wilmouth was born in 1784. She was the daughter of David Owen and Winefred Mullins. She passed away in 1870.

On this 1st day of April in the year Eighteen hundred an fifty personally appeared before me John E. Carson a Justice of the Peace in and for the County and State aforesaid at her residence in said County Wilmuth Laswell age 65 years after being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following Statement to Wit: That she has frequently heard her Father David Owens decd Speaking of his services in the Revolutionary war that he said he enlisted in Wilkes Co. North Carolina & served under Cols Cleveland, Pinkney & Armstrong That he was in the Battle of Kings Mountain and others not now recollected That she has heard him tell Col Thompson (a resident of this County who was a Tory) that he the said David Owens took him prisoner at the Battle of Kings Mountain and asked him if he did not no him & he said he did and dident deny being a Tory & being taken prisoner as Stated by my Father but said he was forced to fight on the other side. That the annexed records of marriage Births deaths etc is the original made by her Father & Mother. David & Wineferd Owens deceased. That after the death of her Father in 1822, kept it up to her death in 1842 - 26th Feb & then she the said Wilmuth Laswell took it and kept it ever since & has no doubt but it is correct. That her Mother kept it after the death of her Father up to her death. That she has heard her Father say he was at the Battle of Cowpens under genl Morgan. That her Father & Mother always told her that they were married at the time stated in the said record & she never heard it doubted. That they lived & cohabited together from her earliest recollections up to the time of separation by death.

I John E Carson a Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Rockcastle State of Kentucky aforesaid do hereby certify that on this day at her residence in the County and State aforesaid personally appeared be fore me (Wilmuth Laswell written between the lines) and sworn and subscribed to the foregoing affidavit in my presence willingly & understandingly and that she is a lady who supports a good character and veracity & her statement on oath has never been disputed and is the best information in witness where of I here unto subscribe my name this 1st day of April 1850. Wilmuth Laswell's name in this certificate enterlined (see above)

Note Wilmouth is named as a daughter of David Owen. She is also listed in David Owen's Revolutionary War Pension Records. Information from Gary L. Laswell, 737 Garfield St., Emporia, KS 66801 indicate that Wilmouth Owen and John Laswell migrated to Platte Co., MO as early as 1844. Wilmouth is listed as a charter member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Green Township. as of 12-Oct-1844.[1]
