Notes

Some online family trees and websites claim he faught in the Civil War in Texas. I have found no evidence to support this fact. This is most likely untrue as he was living in Alabama and the war was happening there as well. He also had children born in Alabama throughout the 1860s.

There is a 1870 census with a John Owens in Greenwood, Bullock County, Alabama with the same family names (including wife and children), but the ages are wrong and it is missing his sons, Thomas (age 14), George (age 11) and Alvi (age 2). Although it's possible Thomas and George had died, Alvi appeared on the following census at age 12.

His gravestone, which was created sometime after 1920, has no birthdate and claims he died in 1912. He died in Robertson County, Texas after 1900 as shown in the census, but his wife, Mollie Owens was still living at the same residence with Jeff McCandless on the following census and claimed she was a widow prior to May 2, 1910.
