Biography

Sumner Packard, 77, a local farmer, passed away at Crystal Lake, Barron, Wisconsin on Saturday, 29 March 1902 due to paralysis from which he had suffered for 17 days. He was born on 6 April 1824 at Cummington, Hampshire, Massachusetts, a son of Chester W. Packard, 1788-1877 and Eunice (Sadler) Packard, 1797-1830.

Mr. Packard married Almira Jane Eaton on 14 November 1850 at Fredonia, Licking, Ohio. She died in 1856. Then on 3 May 1860, he married Juliet Diadema Ham at Freedom, Portage, Ohio.

His obituary in the local newspaper read as follows: "The Republican is pained to chronicle the demise of one of its oldest subscribers, Sumner Packard of Dayton Township on Saturday, 29 March 1902. He lived with his daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Barrington of Crystal Lake and was a brother-in-law of Hon. P. A. Ham.

He was a lifelong Republican politically and was a most exemplary and worthy citizen and Christian man in all the walks of life. After a ripe old age he has gone to his reward and will be mourned by many. The Rev. Coffeen of Almond [Wisconsin] was the officiating minister at the funeral which was held at the Union Church, Crystal Lake, Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. A large concourse of friends being present to pay honorable respect to the deceased.

In the year, 1833, he with his father's family moved from Massachusetts to Ohio where he lived until 1851. About this time he married Jane Eaton who died five years later at the early age of 22 years. Two children were born to them, a boy and girl both of whom died in childhood. In 1852, he came to Crystal Lake [Section 27] where he farmed for the next 50 years. In 1860, he married Diadema Ham, a sister of Hon. P. A. Ham, who died about eight years ago. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Giles Radley and Mrs. W. H. Barrington; an adopted son; and five grandchildren.

The loss is not to his family alone, the community has lost one of the best exemplars it ever had and the world has lost a good man."

Mr. Packard was survived by: his daughters, Esther Belle (Giles) Radley, b. 1862; Katie May (W. H.) Barrington, b. 1865; adopted son, William Dwight Packard, b. 1828; and numerous nieces and nephews.
