Biography

The Rev. Simon Paltrovitch, formerly chief rabbi in Buffalo, who also held pastorates in Chicago, Boston and Cleveland, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Rosen, 75 Fort Washington Avenue. He was born in Russian Poland eighty three years ago and came to the United States in 1872. He leaves, besides Mrs. Rosen, two sons and another daughter. [1]

He died at age 76 and is interred at Riverside Cemetery, Bergen County, NJ. [2]

PER JOHN PHILIPS: Simcha was totally immersed in his studies of Torah and not involved with family or with grandchildren.[3]

PER MARIAN "TODDIE" PALTROW: The family moved several times whenever Simon (Rabbi Paltrovitz) changed congregations. Simon exchanged Hebrew lessons for English lessons with the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe (author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin").[4]

THE HEBREW STANDARD: GOLDEN WEDDING. Paltrowitz - Rev and Mrs. S. Paltrowitz of 210 West 143rd St., celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last week at the Lexington, 103 East 116th Street. Only kins people were present. The bride and groom were preceded to the altar by their sons and daughters, the youngest walking grandchildren acting as maids of honor. The bride was presented with a new wedding ring and pledged her loyalty to her husband. A dinner followed, the table service of the bride and groom being of solid gold. Many toasts befitting the occasion were made by those present and as a souvenir each guest received a photo of the couple mounted in a gold frame. Rabbi Paltrowitz who is a fine type of Orthodox Jew, lately moved to this city from Buffalo, where for over thirty two years he acted as chief rabbi of the orthodox community preferring to spend his declining years in the company of his children. He possesses a fine physique, is active and thoroughly modern in all his ways. He is an author of note and is at present engaged in compiling a book entitled 'Kol Simchah," the sequel to an earlier volume "Keser Swle." Mrs. Paltrowitz is also in splendid health and thoroughly active.[5]

PER JOHN PHILIPS: Simcha even refers to [Reb] Joshua Moses [Paterovich Margolis] in the preface to one of his books.[6]

A portion of letter/email between John Philips and Sydney Levine follows:

Who am I? Well I am a double Palterovich, my father's parents were first cousins, Celia was a daughter of Reb Meyer Palterovich my grandfather, Paltiel, a son of Reb Joshua Moses Palterovich Margolis. Simcha even refers to Joshua Moses in the preface to one of his books. So both my gt grandfathers were brothers to Simcha. Reb Meyer had 5 daughters and 2 sons. All his daughters married so you can imagine there are a significant number of descendants, mostly academics in Law, Medicine and Mathematics!

We have just had a fleeting visit from one of Reb Meyer's most direct descendants, a young man from Moscow of exceptional intellectual brilliance, he at 26 already holds a Ph.D in Theoretical Maths and is about to receive his 2nd Ph.D from the Weizmann Institute in Israel. He is Dr Iosif Polterovich and his older brother, Leonid is Professor of Maths at Tel Aviv University. These brothers are gt-gt grandsons of Rabbi Chaim Nachum Palterovich, the older son of Reb Meyer Palterovich! You asked about the title gaon. A gaon is the title bestowed on a great rabbi, who is usually the leader of his community in religious, philosophical and intellectual terms. Some in my family say that Chaim Nachum was also a gaon. His son Yehudah Leib was the last in a line of 33 rabbis in the Palterovich family, but more importantly, Chaim Nachum is said to be descended from the TAZ, who was Rabbi David Shmuel HaLevi who was born in 1586 and died in 1667!

No, I have a ton of information about the Levitansky family, sent to me by my cousin Gail Rubin, who is the gt-grandaughter of Zipporah and Simcha. Do you know her? I also heard from Rob Levin and Alan Levine, more of your cousins!

I look forward to hearing from you. I live in a beautiful part of England, on the edge of Thomas Hardy country, but right on the coast, a long way from California! Sincerely, John Phillips

Further correspondence between John Phillips and Sydney Levine indicate that John and his wife, Carole, made Aliyah sometime around 2007 to Zichron Yaacov in Israel.
