Biography

George Parker was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

George Parker was born on 25 Jan 1870 at Burra Creek in the Province of South Australia, son of James Parker and Caroline Beer. [1]

George married Rebecca Flower (1869-1962), 23 year old daughter of Somerset immigrant Joseph Flower (1843-1926), on 25 Oct 1893 at her parent's residence in Stony Gap, South Australia [2]

George and Rebecca resided in Stony Gap, Copperhouse, Leighton, and then Booborowie.

George and Rebecca first three children were born at Stony Gap:

  • Vida Ethel, born 1894[3]
  • Mildred Calliss (Milly), born 1896[4]
  • Cecil George, born 1897[5]

George and Rebecca's next three children were born at Copperhouse:

  • Mary Catherine (Cass?), born 1899[6]
  • Rachel Lillian (Lilly), born 1901[7]
  • Joseph James (Joe), born 1904[8]


George died aged 76 at home in Booborarowie, South Australia on 20 Jul 1946, and was buried at Burra Cemetery, Burra, South Australia [9]

George was survived by his wife, five children, twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. [10]

    George Parker Passes
    Mr George Parker who passed away at his home Wynlea Booborarowie on July 20th was the second son of late James and Caroline Parker, Robertstown and was born at Robertstown on January 21st 1870. Later married Rebecca Flower of Stony Gap who survives.
    Mr Parker's early life was spent as a contractor, fencing roads, dams etc. The late Mr. Parker, was well known as a shearer going a way back in New South Wales & also local stations.
    Ill health seemed to follow and he later lived at Copperhouse, where he commenced share farming with late M. J. C. Sandland at Flagstaff.
    He then shifted to Leighton where he share farmed with Mr. I. J. Warnes for 25 years Mr.Parker was a noted teamster, his well known horse team carting wool from Burra some 100 miles and more.
    The late Mr Parker later bought an unimproved block from Mr. A. D. McDonald known then at Dog Kennels Blocks, Booborowie where he successfully carried on mixed farming combined with share farming. Later ill health compelled him to lead a quieter life.
    A widow and family of four daughters and one son are left to mourn their sad loss namely, Vida Milly Cass Lilly and Cecil and Joe deceased twelve grand children & two great grandchildren.)
