Biography

Sarah Parkes was baptised on 15 April 1739 at Sedgley.^[1] She was the daughter of Job Parkes and Hannah Bennett.

She was named in her father's will as the wife of Thomas Caddick, and the couple married on 7 May 1776 in Sedgley, Staffordshire.^[2] Sarah was about 35 and her husband 40, according to the ages recorded on the marriage licence.^[3] The baptism of one daughter in found:

• Sarah Caddick was baptised on 6 February 1785 in Sedgley, to Thomas and Sarah.^[4]

It seems that the couple had no surviving children as Sarah Caddick, described as a widow of Sedgley, left a will written in 1805 which named no children. It did list several individuals as 'cousins', so helps link the broader family group. The will named the following:

• my late father Job Parkes, deceased.
• John Alsop of Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, miller, and William Naylor of Upper Gornal in Sedgley, clerk (later named as executors and cousins).
• Samuel Fereday and William Turton.
• dear sister Mary wife of Edward Cox of Sedgley, gentleman.
• Sarah the wife of ______ Betterton and Mary the wife of John Burrough.
• 'cousin' the said William Naylor and his brothers and sisters Joseph, Isaac, Edward, Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth.
• land in Sedgley divided between 'first cousins' said John Alsop, William Thomas of Heathton in Claverley Salop, Sarah the wife of Richard Lee of Wall Heath in Kinswinford Staffordshire farmer, Elizabeth the wife of James Witton of Claverley aforesaid farmer, Ann the wife of Thomas [Skeye/Keye] of Bobbington Staffordshire farmer, Hannah Naylor widow, Elizabeth the wife of Thomas Webb, Phebe the wife of Joshua Cartwright of Lower Gornal yeoman, Mary Bond widow and Mary Parkes daughter of uncle John Parkes.
• Mary Lee, and Hannah Webb wife of Thomas Webb of Wordesley butcher, two of the children of the said Sarah Lee.
• Hannah and Jane [Skeye/Keye] children of the said Ann.
• 'cousin' Mary wife of William Perry of Claverley.
• 'cousin' Joseph Alsop of Upper Gornal.
• 'second cousins' Joseph Willington, Edward Willington, Benjamin Willington, Manry? the wife of John Dagnal of Walsall, Elizabeth the wife of _______ Dewson of Wolverhampton hinge maker, Mary Willington and Sarah Willington.
• Joseph son of Joseph Cartwright.
• Joseph Bond, Henry Bond and William Bond, children of said Mary Bond.
• Witnesses Frances Newton, Thomas Law and Ben Thompson.

The will was written on 23 February 1805 and proved 11 November 1805.^[5]
