Henry was born in 1802 in St. Austell, Cornwall.[1] Mary Luxon was born ten years later.Henry Parnall married Mary Luxon. They had eight sons[2] and at least three daughters including Mary Ann who was born in about 1837. Their children attended school. The absence of the children from the census during their school years indicates that the schools they attended in the 1840s and 1850s were likely residential.
In 1841, Henry and Mary were living in St. Peter, Gloucestershire, with their children Henry and Thomas. John Parnall (age 70?) lived with them also. He may have been Henry's father. Henry was making scales. The 1846 city directory for Bristol shows that Henry Parnall of Narrow Wine St. was one of 4 Scale, Scale Beam & Weighing Machine Makers (page 83), a Miller Coffee/corn/malt/sugar (page 70) and a Japanner (page 62). Japanning refered to laquering art on tin. On page 61 of the city directory there was an entry for Parnall and Co. of 18, Clare St. listed under Ironmongers, Braziers, Lock and Whitesmiths, and Bell-Hangers. The address is different but it is possible that he had a hand in that as well. In addition, Dennis, W. Alexander wrote that they had a family farm.[3]
In 1851, Henry's scale-making business in Bristol, St. Peter, employed 3 additional men. He and Mary had two pre-schoolers, John and William, and an infant daughter Margaret.
In 1861, there were three employees at the scale and machine shop including their sons Henry and John. William and Rebecca were living at home while attending school.
In 1871, all of the family members who were living together in Bristol, Castle Precincts were manufacturing scales; Henry and Mary and their adult children Henry, William and Margaret. The sons were listed as partners in the business. They also had a servant Ann Haskins.
In 1881, Henry and Mary were living in Fishponds, Stapleton with Henry Jr. and Margaret. The domestic servant was Mary Greenwood. No occupations were listed for the family. Perhaps they sold the business.
Henry passed away later in 1881 at the age of 79 and leaving a personal estate of £148 9s 6d. Mary and Henry died in 1885.
