Biography

A Chronological Summarisation, proves an interesting life for Alexander

1852-3 Alexander: was born early 1850’s. the 3rd son/child of George Paton and Ann Pearson in Dundee, Scotland. [citation needed]

1861 Census: has a 9-year-old "Alexander Paton" listed as a student in the home of his parents in Dundee, Scotland. He is the brother to eight siblings, one of which, sister Isabella Paton then 1 year old, is to [later] feature in a second branch of our Tasmanian family-tree]. [1]

1871 Census: likewise, has an 18-year-old Alexander listed at home, but now employed on the family-farm at America Muir, this, still registered in the town of Dundee. His occupation an agricultural worker. [2] ]

1881 Census: Interestingly, has a 28-year-old Alexander Paton [born in Dundee] listed as managing "Larkins Farm" at Penthurst in Kent, [3] [This is close to London a long way from Dundee, never the less this particular-person is born in Dundee and we can assume, for now is the same person…

1884 March 3rd ‘Alexander’: first arriving in Brisbane, Australia, per the ‘SS Sirsa’, ex Plymouth [London U.K.]. So, happens that his [Scottish] wife to-be, Agnes Spaven had arrived earlier on October 12th 1883, on the ‘SS Duke of Devonshire’ ex Plymouth [London U.K.].

1885 November 4th: we found that Alex & Agnes had married at the ‘Creek-street Presbyterian Church’ in Brisbane. [4]

1886 A Return to Scotland: It becomes obvious that Alex & Agnes return to Scotland [[ship and date yet to be confirmed] [citation needed] ], but it was a fact that some 300 days after their Australian marriage, their son Norman William Paton was born in the Parish of Monifeith, Forfar, Scotland on September 6th [citation needed]. Norman-William was baptised November 30th the same year, [5]

1886 Mid December this family: Alex P Paton [about 34], Agnes [37], & Norman [1] are passengers aboard the ship ‘Loch Katrine’, sailing from Glasgow and arrive in Melbourne March 9th 1887, [6] The family, then travel on-to Launceston…

It is no coincidence that Alexander and family have found themselves in Launceston as this is the home/location of his younger sister Isabella, it is unfortunate that Isabella is to pass-away August this same year, this, soon after Alexander arrival. Isabella Paton (b.1860-d.1887) was [at the time] married to Andrew Duncan (b.c.1857-d.1907) a boot-maker/importer from Dundee…

1888 A daughter: is born to Alexander & Agnes Paton, "Iris Oonah Paton", May 7th in Launceston. [Oonah being the name of a, then, new small steam ship, plying the Bass Straight shipping services. Sadly "Iris Oonah" is to die in her first year][7] and [8]

1890 A second son: "Prior Pearson Paton ", born January 22nd in Hobart. [9]

1891 A third son: "Douglas Macmillan Paton ", born July 4th in Hobart. [10]

1900 Agnes Paton: passes away April 16th in the Hobart General Hospital. Beloved wife of Alexander Pearson Paton, in her 47th year. [11] She was buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery.

1901 Alexander remarries: On November 25, At the residence of the officiating minister, Rev. John Anderson. Alexander Paton, married Amy Rosa Wood, the youngest daughter of George and Elisabeth Wood of Kellevie. [12]

1902 A daughter to Alex & Amy: "Agnes Athene Paton", [13] … [Later in life ‘Agnes-Athene’ is to marry Percy Woolford, they go on to have six children of their own].

1904 A son to Alex & Amy: "Spencer Nivan Paton", At this point [Jan2015] we believe Spencer had no children and passed away in Melbourne in 1978... [14]

1919 & 1922 'Electoral Rolls': have both Alexander P & son Norman William as farmers on Bruny Island.

1931 Alexander Paton passes away: January 20th in the Hobart General Hospital, in his 78th year. [15] He was buried on January 22nd at Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Free Scotland, Section B, Number 157 [16]

Alexander’s, 2nd Great-grandson, 'Mark Paton' in Tasmania, communicated during May, bringing our attention to his version of the Paton-Family-Tree on WikiTree. This led to an over-all review of our [earlier] WikiTree data as it was quiet fascinating, to our family, to find that this branch of the Paton tree has propagated out of Tasmania, Australia. Mark Paton had introduced us to more detail, Alexander’s wife Agnes, and first son Norman William Paton born in the Parish of Monileith, Forfar, Scotland and their Tasmanian family.
Later the same year, 'Lynn (Rooke) McNair' communicated in November and bought to our attention to her branch of this expanding Tasmanian family-tree. Lynn being a Great-Granddaughter of Alexander’s second marriage, Lynn & Family a new sub-branch to the Paton-family-tree…

Paton-517 and Paton-410 appear to represent the same person because: Matching wife and daughter
Alexander Paton is my great grandfather, yet when I ran a relationship test it was negative. There is no mention in his list of children of his children in his second marriage. My mother, grand-daughter of Alex told me that he had children Norman, Prior and Douglas, she did not know about Iris, who died as an infant. According to my mother Alex's wife Agnes (Spaven) left him taking Douglas with her. He then was to take on my great grandmother, Amy Rose Wood as a housekeeper, however her mother would not allow it so he married her. I found the Marriage notice in the Mercury archives but could not retrieve a date due to it being a paid site. Alex and Amy were to have two children, Spencer and Agnes, Athene (my maternal grandmother). I have met great aunt Agnes, now dec, daughter of Douglas.
