John was born on the 19th July 1882^[1][2] and was baptised on the 19th August 1882 at St. Andrew, Deal, Kent, England, the son of Robert Patterson^[3] (Clerk in Orders) and Esther Beatrice Patterson of St. Andrew's Rectory^[4]

On the 23rd October 1915, John married Grace MacGillycuddy Hanson at Marylebone Presbyterian Church, Marylebone, London, England. John Patterson, 33 years, bachelor, Captain R.S.A. of The Rectory, Deal, son of Robert Patterson (Rector of Deal); and Grace MacGillycaddy Hanson, 22 years, spinster of Hareby House, Marylebone, daughter of George Hanson (Presbyterian Minister). Witnessed by R. Patterson & George Hanson^[3]
