Martha Lewis Payne was born on November 1, 1795 in Wilkes, North Carolina, United States.^[1]

Martha (21) married William Shelton (21) (born on February 7, 1796 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, United States; son of William Franklin Shelton and Martisha (Taylor) Shelton) on August 6, 1817 in Maury, Tennessee.^{[2] [3] [4]} Their children were:
