Biography

William was born about 1832 in Burke County, North Carolina. He was the oldest son of Elijah Pendley and Louisa Piercy and was named after his paternal grandfather, which was the Pendley family tradition for hundreds of years. He served in Company E, North Carolina 58th Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army in the Civil War, and was killed at the battle of Chickmauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. Members of Company E nominated him to the "Roll of Honor" for his heroics during the battle.
