Francisco was born on the 1st of February 1741 in the parish of Canhas, in Madeira.[1] He was the legitimate son of Pedro Fernandes Abelha and Francisca Pereira.[1] Francisco was given his name by his Godfather Manoel Fernandez Afaiate who was present when he was baptized on the 6th of February.[1]
