Biography

The son of Elijah Henry Perkins] and Maria (Bishop) Hale, and named, with his middle name, for his mother's first husband, who died at the age of 35, Charles Perkins was born in Geneseo, New York[citation needed] in 1841, residing thee with his family.[1][2] In 1860, Charles lived in Geneseo, sharing quarters with 33-year-old William Nye, a surgeon, while working as a clerk.[3]

His father passed away in 1862 and Charles enlisted in 136th New York Infantry, enlisting as a Private at Geneseo on August 1, 1862 for a term of three years. He mustered out with his company on June 13, 1865, near Washington, District of Columbia.[citation needed]

Charles and his mother moved west to Michigan, where Charles married Minerva L. Hale (1843-1924), the daughter of Lorenzo Dow Hale and his first wife, Lydia Sheffield Smith. They married in Ann Arbor, Michigan on October 3, 1866,[4] having two known children together:

  1. William Hale Perkins (1870-1940)
  2. Carroll Howard Perkins (1874-1955)

Three years after his marriage, Charles' widowed mother married his father-in-law. Charles and his family made their home in Grand Rapids Township, Michigan, where Charles worked as a furniture manufacturer, boarding with Peter and Cora Pierce and their family.[5] By 1880, Charles and Minnie and his wife had established their own household in Grand Rapids Township, while Charles worked as an accountant.[6] Their household included, in 1880, a boarder, 22-year-old John Fowler, who worked for the railroad as a clerk, and a domestic 16-year-old Dena Deane, an immigrant from Holland. In 1900, residing on South Fate Street in Grand Rapids Township, Charles worked as a salesman.[7] By 1900, Charles again listed his occupation in furniture, and his household included a 22-year-old domestic servant from Swedent, Marie Lundstrom.[8]

Charles Perkins passed away in Grand Rapids, Michigan[citation needed] at the age of 73 and is buried with his family at Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor, Michigan.[9]
