Census

1850 Census. Mary was living alone in a home located between James and Zephronia and William and Isabella. She was 44 and had the following children still in the home with her:
  1. Mary age 17;
  2. Elizabeth age 14;
  3. Simpson age 12;
  4. Augustus age 12; and
  5. Levi age 9.[1]
1870 Census. Gus was living in Choctaw County, Mississippi at age 30 with his wife, Sarah age 24, and one child, Ida, less than one year old. There were also three other people living with him at the time: William T. H. Hodges, Messer Langford and Ann Holland.[2]

Note: There was a Mary Petty living close by, who I believe was his mother. Also, they were living a couple of houses away from Pinkney F. Shuffield and his wife Eliza.

1880 Census. Gus age 38 was living at home with his spouse, Sallie Petty age 33, in Sumner, Mississippi. There were five children and his mother, "Pollie" age 80; his sister Mary age 44; and one brother, Levi age 37 and widowed. The children were:
  1. Ada (Ida) age 9;
  2. Greeley age 7;
  3. Filson (Tildon) age 5;
  4. Hays (Hayes) age 3; and
  5. Jolie (Julia) age 1.

Henry Read and Henry Johnston were also living with them.[3]
The above census shows Pollie as mother being born in SC with her parents born in GA. Should this census be correct, this would not be Mary 'Pollie' daughter of Levi II. More research is needed. (Notes by Teresa J. Gorge)
