Ammi Phillips was a notable American folk art painter.
He was born on April 24, 1788, in Colebrook, Connecticut, the son of Samuel Phillips (1760-1842), a farmer by trade and veteran of the Revolutionary war, and Millea (1763-1861).[1]
He married, first, Laura Brockway in Nassau, New York on March 18th, 1813.[2] They had four sons: Henry, George, William, and Russell Phillips. Laura died on February 2nd, 1830 at the age of 38.[1]
He married, second, Jane Ann Caulkins, twenty years his junior, five months after the passing of his first wife. They had four children together: Anna, Jane, Samuel, and Sarah Phillips. Sarah passed away at the age of four and a half.[1]
