Note: 1890, Williamson Co., IL. In an affidativ for Mary Ann Birdwell, his sister, he states that Mary Ann was married to Joseph Birdwell. Found in the pension application of Mary Ann Birdwell: "State of Illinois. Williamson County. On this the 9th day of June 1890 came William Philips age 75 years old and after being sworn states that he was acquainted with Joseph Birdwell and that he was with said Joseph Birdwell in Col. Benjamin Snodgrass Regt. of the Florida War of 1835 we both enlisted in the fall of 1835 in said Regt. and was discharge [sic] in the the spring of 1836 together he further states that he is personaly [sic] acquainted with Mary Ann Birdwell his widdow [sic] was present when Joseph Birdwell and Mary Ann Birdwell ware [sic] married some time in the early parts of 1840 in Marshall County State of Alabama. (signed) William Philips. Subscribed and sworn to before me this June the 9th A.D. 1890 and I further state that I am persnaly [sic] acquainted with the affiant and no [sic] he is entitled to full credit for truth and voracity and that I have have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. (signed) A. B. Davis a Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Williamson and state of Illinois Certificate on file at the Pension department.". Other sources say his wife's name was Mary Katherine Nigar.
