Land grant in S. Carolina dated Sept 3, 1765 for a tract of 100 acres of land iin Granville Co. on Savannah River, boounded on the SW side by Kelly and on the south by the river. The location of this land is near the moth of Rosses Creek. The tract was surveyed by John Pickens, District Surveyor. He received another grant for 50 acres on Sept. 23, 1784 surveyed by Pat. Calhoun, D.S. and described as bounded by the river on the S.W., by Wm. McGowen on the east, and on the NW by his own land. If he was a soldier during the revolution we have no record of it. There is record that he receieved an indent in 185 for some beeves furnished the militia. (the census of 1790 shows him in Abbeville Dist., with 3 males above 16 and 3 females, including himself and his wife.
Working out this family has been a tedious task, depending largely on census records and traditions. He was not in Abbeville Co. in 1800 and his whereabouts have not been discovered. He may have gone to Georgia since later census records show some grandchildren born in Ga. around 18001805. Tradition states they were early pioneers to Tenn. and lived in Lincoln Co. Tenn. but by 1819 most of them moved to the new county Hardin, with his wife. He was between ages of 80-90, born between 1740-50. His wife was born between 1760-1700. the two sons of Jonathan Pickens, Sr. also moved to Hardin Co. as will be shown.
He had two sons and four daughters.
A letter from Don to Jim indicates that Jonathan Pickens served as a Patriot in the American Revolution.
The letter talks about a Mrs. Fugitt that is a member of the DAR that has a book on the Pickens.
