Biography

Alice Ruth Pierce was born on June 6, 1892 to John M. Steen and Ida Alice Bonsall Steen in Las Vegas, New Mexico. She was one of 4 children born to the union. Her siblings were: Olive May Pierce (1880-1956), Bessie Della Pierce (1884-1965), and Floyd Maxwell Pierce (1894-1976).

On December 12, 1912, she married George Roscoe Stewart (1891-1916). They had two daughters: Charlotte Kathryn Stewart Miller (1914-1981) and Anita Caroline Stewart Herms Mitchell (1916-2005). Her husband became ill and died just shy of their fourth Wedding Anniversary.

Alice would go on to marry three more times to William "Bill" Bryan, Russell Phillip Goulden and James Aaron Fitch. The family has searched thoroughly for the dates of her marriages with Bryan and Goulden, but have had no success.

James Aaron Fitch was her brother-in-law who was married to her sister, Olive. After Olive passed away, she and James decided that they could survive financially by getting married. A little over a year later following Olive's death, they were married on June 22, 1957. The relationship became more than a friendship over time as observed by her grandchild and great grandchildren.

Alice would often go to visit her grandson, Rex Tony Miller in Phoenix, Arizona. On one such visit, they were traveling by car with her daughter, her son-in-law (driving) and her grandson. Rex was blowing bubbles with his bubble gum. Alice asked how he did that, so Rex began coaching on how to blow bubbles. She asked for a piece of gum and chewed and chewed and chewed, trying to soften it. When it was finally ready, she started to blow a bubble and instead blew the gum out of her mouth with it landing down the collar of her son-in-law's shirt while he was driving. Needless to say, holy hilarity ensued.

She passed away November 15, 1974 in Garden Grove, California.
