Biography

Helen Caroline Piero was born on Friday, September 10, 1858, in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. Her parents were John Ignatius Piero (Thursday, January 23, 1823 - Saturday, March 13, 1897) and Caroline Leimbruger Piero (Sunday, August 3, 1923 - Thursday, May 2, 1895). Helen's father was born in Alsace-Lorraine. Her mother was born in Wallbach, Switzerland. Helen's parents were married in Canton on Thursday, September 25, 1845. Her father was a carpenter. Helen was the seventh of eleven children.

Helen married John Edward Schauer in 1878. She was nineteen years old. He was twenty-three years old. They had seven children: Charles Dennis Schauer (Thursday, September 4, 1879 - ? ); Olive C. Schauer McKinley (Wednesday, October 20, 1880 - Saturday, November 17, 1962); Francis Albert Schauer (Wednesday, September 5, 1882 - May 1944); Walter E. Schauer (Tuesday, March 18, 1884 - Saturday, January 8, 1949); and Paul Alfred Schauer (Saturday, July 13, 1889 - Tuesday, August 30, 1960). The 1900 U.S. Census asked the question bout how many children a woman had, and how many were still living. The answers recorded for Helen were seven and four respectively. Charles Dennis was one of the seven, but not one of the four. It seems likely given the five year gap between Walter and Paul's births that two other children were born who died as infants.

It seems apparent from social news and travel news in the Canton Repository Monday. March 12, 1905, edition on page 12 that the family had returned from Chicago to Canton to live with her husband, Edward, who had been working in Canton for the Sun Vapor Street Light company.

The Canton Repository, Sunday, February 16, 1908, page 14, wrote the following article. TO BID FAREWELL TO PRESIDENT - Satolli Branch, L.C.B.A. to Give Social for Mrs. Schauer As a farewell to its president, Mrs. Helen Schauer, Satolli Branch, Ladies Catholic Benevolent association, gives a social Tuesday night to which all members are asked to come. Mrs. Schauer leaves Wednesday night for Chicago, where she and her husband, Edward Schauer, will make their future home.

Helen passed away at the age of sixty-five on Tuesday, December 18, 1923, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
