Helen Caroline Piero was born on Friday, September 10, 1858, in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. Her parents were John Ignatius Piero (Thursday, January 23, 1823 - Saturday, March 13, 1897) and Caroline Leimbruger Piero (Sunday, August 3, 1923 - Thursday, May 2, 1895). Helen's father was born in Alsace-Lorraine. Her mother was born in Wallbach, Switzerland. Helen's parents were married in Canton on Thursday, September 25, 1845. Her father was a carpenter. Helen was the seventh of eleven children.
Helen married John Edward Schauer in 1878. She was nineteen years old. He was twenty-three years old. They had seven children: Charles Dennis Schauer (Thursday, September 4, 1879 - ? ); Olive C. Schauer McKinley (Wednesday, October 20, 1880 - Saturday, November 17, 1962); Francis Albert Schauer (Wednesday, September 5, 1882 - May 1944); Walter E. Schauer (Tuesday, March 18, 1884 - Saturday, January 8, 1949); and Paul Alfred Schauer (Saturday, July 13, 1889 - Tuesday, August 30, 1960). The 1900 U.S. Census asked the question bout how many children a woman had, and how many were still living. The answers recorded for Helen were seven and four respectively. Charles Dennis was one of the seven, but not one of the four. It seems likely given the five year gap between Walter and Paul's births that two other children were born who died as infants.
