Biography

Birth and Parentage

Thomas Cheyney Plowman was born in the New Forest, Hampshire, on 3 April 1847, the first and eldest son of Robert Angel Plowman and Emma Cheyney [1] He had a younger sister, Caroline Kate, and a younger brother, Frederic Damen Plowman. He was born at a farm called 'Beck' in Beaulieu, Hampshire.)[2] He was named after his grandfather, Thomas Cheyney who had died less than a year before. [3]

His father, Robert Angel Plowman (recorded as a farmer in his son's marriage certificate and the 1861 census for his son Frederic, in which he stated that he farmed 710 acres in Hampshire[4]) came from Crewkerne in Somerset and was the son of Edward Plowman, a saddler and harness maker. Thomas Cheyney doesn't appear in the 1861 census with his family when he was 14, but in 1871, at 23, he had left home, gone to London to seek his fortune and was boarding (with his 16 year old brother Frederick, whose occupation is given as 'Merchant Seaman') in St Leonard Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, England at the home of a widow, Elizabeth Holdsworth. Marriage and Family

In the summer of 1871, Thomas married his landlady's daughter, Eliza Margaret Holdsworth in Bethnal Green, London. [6] Eliza Margaret wasn't at home in April 1871 when the census was taken - she was staying with her younger cousins, the Hodgsons, in Titsey, Surrey. [7]

Thomas and Eliza must have met some time before, because on 17 July 1871, they were married by Wesleyan minister George Taylor Morrison,[8] in the Tower Hamlets Wesleyan Chapel. Eliza's father's profession was recorded in the marriage record as Wine Merchant. [9]

Several of the Holdsworth siblings were married in the Church of England, so it is probably that Thomas Cheyney Plowman was already a Methodist. At any rate, he and Eliza were faithful members of their Methodist chapel for all of their lives.

Life and Career

Thomas Cheyney Plowman began as a commercial traveller, selling wine and beer, perhaps following his father-in-law, Carter Holdsworth's example.

Thomas Cheyney Plowman - Residence[11]

He and Eliza and their growing family lived for a time at 14, Park Rd, Dalston, Hackney, London, and then Thomas took out a lease for 21 years at No. 66a Dalston Lane (a messuage and shop). The premises were to be used for 'the business of a dealer in bottled beer, spirits, etc., and if desired, of a grocer and tea dealer.' [12]

Premises Intended for Thomas Cheyney Plowman's Brewery[13]

He later enlarged the business, merged 'Thomas Cheyney Plowman' with William Pierson and Barrett's, and became 'Plowman and Barrett's Co. Ltd, [14] building a bottling and brewing plant in Vauxhall, SW London. [15]

That Sunday evening, Thomas' unmarried sister Leonora was visiting their detached house; 96, Carleton Rd, [20][21]near Southside, Islington. The house no longer exists; there are modern blocks where it once stood, so it was probably bombed in the Second World War.

Thomas was also bottling and brewing in premises in Grove Rd, Holloway. [22]

In the 1901 census they were still living in 155 (Rose Mount), Queens Road, [25](now called Queen's Drive), on the south side of Finsbury Park, [26][27] a 20 minute walk across Finsbury Park to 27, Endymion Road, the family home of William Piercy, who later married Elsie Marion. They also had a newfangled thing called a telephone, and Thomas's name was in the telephone book. [28]

Clement Piercy, brother in law of Elsie Marion Plowman, Thomas Cheyney's daughter, remembers the family as

a large family who attended the (Wesleyan) Church. We became very friendly and went about sight seeing together. I visited (their home) in Queens Road and got to know his sisters Elsie and Winnie who both had classes at the Sunday School, there was, I think, an elder sister who married a Mr Stanton and went to live in the Wilds of Canada. I remember Harold telling me that they had to ride on hoarse back about four miles if they wanted the doctor. Mr Plowman senior always wore dark glasses and had one of the long pews (on) the left hand side of the centre of the Church, about half way down. He was a fine, tall man and very active. Mrs Plowman was shorter and smaller in stature but a very cheery soul, full of smiles, who always gave me a welcome. They moved to Muswell Hill, to a house known as 'Craigie Lea', Muswell Avenue, a detached house in a lovely garden. [29][30][31] (Now a preparatory school).

In my branch of the family, it is traditional for the eldest son of each generation to be given the middle name of "Cheyney". My father was James Donald Cheyney STANTON. When I was born, my grandmother wanted me to have the middle name of Cheyney too, but my parents refused because they were afraid it would lead to me being teased at school. In some ways I wish they had continued the tradition.

She was absolutely right! I only discovered this a couple of years ago, and have had great fun working back up the line. It gets fascinating, I assure you! The Cheyney name is very interesting. I've only got as far as James Cheyney of Aldbourne, Berkshire - visited the Berkshire Record Office for the first time earlier this year, and found some great primary sources there.
Thomas Cheyney PLOWMAN is my great-great-grandfather. His daughter Ethel Maud PLOWMAN married Frederic George STANTON. Their son Donald Frederic STANTON is my paternal grandfather. My grandmother always said that the Plowman side of the family owned a brewery in London. She was obviously right!
