Except for his time away in military service and as a prisoner in Union camps during the Civil War, he spent the vast majority of his life in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. He enlisted in Company E, 63rd Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry, on 07 Jul 1862. He returned to Chatham County after his Confederate cavalry unit was decimated at the Seige of Petersburg. Shortly afterward, he was arrested by occupying Union troops as a "deserter" and was interned in Howard County, Indiana, United States, in March 1865. He made his way home to his dying wife long after hostilities had ended, later got married once again to her sister, and raised a large and happy family.
He was an exceptionally skilled carpenter and cabinetmaker, although most food for his family was grown on his farm. He was a contractor in construction of the Chatham County Courthouse in Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina.
His burial is at Gum Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA.
