What a wonderful name! Otho Popham was born to another Otho Popham (whose father was also Otho) and Honor (Marshall) Popham, and baptised on 9 January 1739 in Bodmin, Cornwall, England. [1] His siblings had more conventional names: Mary, Grace, John, Elizabeth, and another Mary (the first one died in a matter of days).
Bequest from the 1739 (proved 1746) Will of Grace Marshall to his mother: "Item I Give and Bequeath unto Honour the Wife of Otho Popham Five Pounds Two Years after my Decease and to her Child my Godson Five Pounds Fourteen Years after my decease to bind him an Apprentice."
Otho married Mary Hardin on 30 October 1770[2] [3] in Bodmin, Cornwall. [4] After naming his eldest son Otho, he chose fairly ordinary names for the rest of his children: Robert, John, Ann, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth.
Otho died on 18 October 1815 and was buried in Bodmin, Cornwall. [5] As a genealogist, I shall always be grateful he had such an unusual name (easier to find in the records!)
