Biography

Marie Adelaide Potvin was born on a Wednesday, July 02, 1828 at St. Ours, Quebec to Joseph Arpin Potvin, and Catherine Bergevin-Langevin. She was at least the 10th. child of 12 that have been found in the historical records. Marie was baptized the very next day as was so common in those days for fear of infant mortality. [1] Her God Parents were Francois Chapdelaine and Catherine Arpin. It is not known who these people were.

On February 19, 1849, when she was about 20 ½ years old, Marie married Jean-Baptiste Gedeon Labossiere in Immaculee-Conception Church St. Ours. [2] Sadly, her mother had already passed away, but from the parish record, it appears that her father was alive. They went on to have 11 children, nine boys and two girls, all born in St. Ours. They had one set of twins, Adolphe & Calixte, who although they were still living in St. Ours, were baptized at nearby St. Denis. It could be that Marie had gone there for better care as it may have been known she was carrying twins.

Not much is known about Adelaide’s family, but she did have at least one older sister, Edesse Potvin who had married Jean-Baptiste’s older brother, Olivier Labossiere on January 29, 1849, also at St. Ours only three weeks earlier. So two Labossiere brothers married two Potvin sisters only three weeks apart.

[3] No Census Date on sheet.

It is estimated that the Jean-Baptiste Gedeon and Adelaide Labossiere family probably lived in the United States, at Manchaug, Sutton, Massachusetts, for only a year or so, between 1869 and 1870, but this duration cannot be proven yet. Their daughter. Victorine married in 1875 at St. Ours, Quebec, Canada and son, Amedee, married at East Douglas in 1879. They were definitely living at Manchaug near Sutton, MA for the 1870 census, next door to Gedeon's younger brother, Olivier and his family. 1870 US Census MA, Worcester, Sutton, Manchaug, Page 56 Lines 10-22: John Labosea, (Jean Baptiste Gedeon Labossiere ),52: wife, Delia, (Adelaide Potvin), 42: 11 children: Edward, 20; Celiena, (Victorine), 18; Ammida, (Amede), 17; Peter, (Pierre), 15; Freman, (Clement), 14; TWINS: Adolph, 11; Calis, (Calixte), 11; Leas, (Leasse), 9; Alfred, 6; Oliver, 4; George, 1. Census date: July 1, 1870. [4]

Jean Baptiste Gedeon Labossiere and his family were living at Saint-Ours, Quebec, Canada in the 1871 [5]Canada census thus they must have moved back to Canada. They have eight children at home at that time. Gedeon and Aldelaide had 11 children by the time of the 1871 census and eight children appear to be with them, but some of the names are different and the ages are off quite a bit. The census listing for the family is: [Correct names and ages are in brackets.] J.Bte. Labossiere, 55 (53); Delaide, (Adelaide), Labossiere-Potvin, 40 (43): eight children: Edouard, 17 (21); Delaide, 16, (Victoire, 19); Pierre, 12 (16); Clement, 8 (13); J.Bte. 14, (Amedee, 17); Anna, 7 (Leasse, 9: Adolphe, 5 (11); Calix, 5 (11); No date on census, but officially it began April 2, 1871. It is difficult to tell which of the children is which. It is unknown if the family moved back to Massachusetts after 1871.

Another version of the story which is supposed to have been written by a grand daughter has the Jean-Baptiste Gedeon Labossiere - Adelaide Potvin family arriving from Manchaug, Massachusetts, U.S.A. in 1880. They then homesteaded on the northeast of 6-5-9. This means the North East quarter or 160 acres of Section 6, Township 5, Range 9. The town of Sutton, MA, near East Douglas contains five villages, known as Sutton Center, Manchaug, Wilkinsonville, West Sutton, and South Sutton. Thus this version of the story is certainly as correct as the one derived from the historical records, perhaps even more accurate. The homesteading part is certainly correct as two homestead documents have been found at Archives Canada.

There is documentation to show that they actually did live in Manchaug, but there is some evidence that they returned to St-Ours from about 1872 - 1879. St-Ours Parish records of 1877-1899 image 99 of 983 Feb. 28, 1879: Jean-Baptiste Gedeon Labossiere & his wife Adelaide Potvin were the godparents to a Clara Lamoureux, child of Bruno Lamoureux & Lina Lachambre. [6] They may have moved to MA by October when Amedee married. Gedeon moved to Manitoba by the spring of 1880 , but it appears that Adelaide and some of the younger children stayed behind at Sutton for awhile as they are found in the 1880 US Census.

Adelaide, later moved to nearby Somerset and she died there on February 25, 1916. There does not appear to be a grave marker for her. It is not known for certain where she is buried. Marie Adelaide Potvin is descended from seven Filles du Roi and two Carignan Soldiers.
