Mathieu was first counted in the 1860 census with his wife and 2 eldest children on 4 July 1860. He was working as a blacksmith and living next to his cousin Bertrand Cadet Pousson.[13] In 1870 Mathieu was living in the same house with his wife and 6 children and still working as a blacksmith .[10]Mathieu went to the St. Landry Court House in Opelousas on 12 October 1878 to prove he was a citizen of the United States. He immigrated in 1854, had applied for naturalization in 1857, and was naturalized in 1860 but the paperwork was lost. The judge found that "..Mathieu Pousson is hereby declared to be a duly naturalized citizen of the United States of America: and that a certificate issue to him as such granted in open court this 12th day of October A D 1878".[14]
In 1880 Mathieu was now working as a farmer, living in the same house with his wife and 8 children.[11]
In 1900 and 1910, Mathieu and Euphrosine were still in Pointe aux Loups (Wolf's Point) area, what is now called Iota, Acadia Parish, LA with only their youngest son Galbert still at home.[15][16]
Mathieu lived next to his cousin's Bertrand "Cadet" and Adele for most of his life in what is now Iota, Acadia Parish, LA. [17]
He passed away on 11 May 1916[18] and is buried in the Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery[19]
