Biography

Sarah (Powell) Lofthouse was born in Lancashire, England.

Sarah was born on the 16th October 1888^[1] in Atherton, to the south west of Bolton in Lancashire^[2][3]. Her parents were William Powell (b. abt 1857) and Sarah Griffiths (b. abt 1862)^[4] and in the 1891 census she was shown to be living with two siblings: Isabella (b. abt 1884) and Mary (b. abt 1886): all at 13 West Bank Street, Atherton.

The 1901 census reveals five further siblings: Eleanor Powell (b. abt 1891), William B Powell (b. abt 1894), Edward Powell (b. abt 1896), Nathaniel Powell (b. abt 1898) and Elizabeth A Powell (b. abt 1900)^[5]; now all living at 31 West Bank Street. On this census Isabella and Mary have the surname Dunn and are listed as step-daughters, their birth locality is given as West Leigh whereas the remaining siblings are all shown as being born in Atherton.

She married Richard Lofthouse at St Anne's Parish Church in Hindsford, Atherton on 30th August 1913^[6]. Both were listed as residing at 27 West Bank Street at the time of the marriage.

They had four children: Edward (b. 14th March 1915; bp. 25th April 1915), Richard (b. 19th July 1916; bp. 20th August 1916), Thomas (b. 30th July 1923; bp. 19th August 1923) and Nathaniel, or Nat, Lofthouse (b. 27th August 1925; bp. 27th September 1925).

Sarah died some time before December 1974, surviving her husband, Richard, by sixteen years^[7].
