Flag of Lancashire (adopted 2008)
Nat Lofthouse OBE was born in Lancashire, England.

Nat was born in Bolton, Lancashire, on 27th August 1925[1], son of Richard Lofthouse and Sarah Powell.

He started playing football with Bolton Wanderers as an amateur on 4th September 1939, a mere day after the declaration of war with Germany. As a result of the interruption of play it was not until 1946 that he finally made his professional debut at the legendary Burnden Park ground. Nats wartime was spent in the coal mines around Bolton as one of the many members of the Bevin Boys.

After surviving the war in the darkness of the mines, the return to the surface to play his beloved game must have been a great relief. It was not long before he witnessed a tragedy though: during the FA Cup sixth round second leg tie at Burnden Park between Bolton and Stoke City on 9th March 1946 when thirty three Bolton fans were killed and hundreds injured when an overloaded stand resulted in crushing and collapsing of the terrace barriers.[2].

On 6th December 1947 Nat married Alma Foster[3] at St Paul's Church, Astley Bridge in Bolton[4]. They had two children, Jeff and Vivien[5].

Nat was eventually picked up to be part of the national (England) team during the period 1946 to 1958.

After retirement from playing in 1960 he went on to take up the mantle of team manager in 1968 until 1971 and had a further stint as caretaker manager in 1985.

Nat was honoured with an OBE in the New Year Honours for 1984.

He died at the age of 85 on 15th January 2011[6][7].

A statue of Nat was erected outside Bolton Wanderers stadium, at the time named The Reebok Stadium, and was unveiled on 24th August 2013.
