Biography

Amanda was born on 6 January 1855, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Charles F. Preall and Susan Harvey.[1]

She was reported twice in the 1860 census, both as living with her parents and siblings in Jackson Township, Cambria, Pennsylvania, [2] and also as living with her grandparents Thomas and Elizabeth Harvey and others, in ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [3] (See the Research Notes below.)

She was reported twice in the 1870 census, both as living with her parents and siblings in West Wheatfield Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania (and attending school), [4] and also as living with her grandparents Thomas and Elizabeth Harvey and others, in ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [5] (See the Research Notes below.)

On 13 June 1875, she married John J Pierson, at the Mariners Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was a clerk, living in Camden, New Jersey, and Amanda was living in Philadelphia. [6] [7] [8] They apparently had five children:[9]

Anna Pierson (1876-1901)[10][11]
Elizabeth Harvey Pierson (1877-1944)[12]
Florence Pierson (1880-)
Bessie Pierson (1884-)
Howard Pierson (1888-1889)

In 1880, John and Amanda were living at 110 Denmark Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with their children Anna, Elizabeth, and Florence. John was a caterer. [13]

In 1900, John and Amanda were living at 527 Berkley Street, Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, with their children Anna, Elizabeth, Florence, and Bessie, his brother Robert, and with two boarders (Julia Harvey and William Raab). John was a lithograph salesman, Anna was an [illegible] operator, and Elizabeth and Florence were shoe packers. [14]

In 1910, John and Amanda were living at 222 Seventh Street, Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, with their daughter Elizabeth and cousin Lydia C. Ross. John was a commercial traveler in soaps, and Elizabeth was a packer for a spice company. [9]

Amanda died on 8 August 1918, at 855 Haddon Street, Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, of cancer of the bladder. Elizabeth, presumably her daughter, was the informant, and lived at the same address. On 12 August 1918, she was buried in Harleigh Cemetery, Camden County, New Jersey. [1] [15] [16]

Research Notes

Amanda is present twice in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, one living with Thomas and Elizabeth Harvey in Philadelphia,[3][5] and another living with Charles and Susan Preall in western Pennsylvania.[2][4] This might suggest that two different people were named 'Amanda Preall'. However, the Amanda who married John P Pierson in Philadelphia in 1875 is the daughter of Charles Preall and Susan Harvey according to her death certificate,[1] and the granddaughter of Elizabeth Harvey according to Elizabeth's death notice. [17] Further, I have found no other evidence of a second Amanda. Perhaps Amanda was listed twice because she lived part of the year with her parents, and part with her grandparents.
