Biography
Maria Helena Elizabeth Jacomina was born in the Cape Colony on 7 August 1860; she was the daughter of Johannes Petrus Pretorius and Maria Helena Susanna (Steyn) Pretorius. She was christened on 9 September 1860 in Robertson.
She was 17 years old when she married 37 year old widower Frans Jacobus Wilhelmus van der Merwe in the NG Church in Calvinia on 24 September 1877.[1]

Frans passed away in 1880 and she then married widower Jan Johannes Steenkamp in the NG Church in Calvinia on 17 December 1883; he was 42 years old and she 22.[2]
