Biography

Stephen Morphew was born about 1812 in Tennessee. His parents were William C. Proctor and Sarah Everidge.

He served as a Private in Will's Co., Cawlfield's Batt'n, Alabama Mounted Volunteers in the Florida War. This should have been the Second Seminole War between 1835-1842. [1]

He must have married Catherine Moore about 1842 in Alabama based on the birth of the first child.

The 1850 Census shows Stephen 38, farmer, wife Catherine 27, and children Mary 14; Henry 11; William 7; Joe 6; Nancy 4; and Jeremiah 1. They are living in Township 4, Range 5, Jackson, Alabama. [2]

Catherine must have died shortly after the census and he married Minerva Moore abt 1850 because James was born in 1851. Known children of Catharine and Stephen: Henry, William, Joseph, Nancy Alice, Jeremiah "Jerry", and Rebecca. Known children of Stephen and Minerva are James Men and Jackson Lafayette. The question is there are two more daughters, Mary Ann and Sarah. Is Catharine their mother or is there another wife?

I'm not sure what happened by 1860, but the Census shows, Stephen 48, farmer, no wife and children Nancy Alice 13, Jeremiah 11; and Rebecca 9. There is also a day Laborer, Joe 15 there as well. They are living in Precinct 11, Titus, Texas. [3]

He is on the voter registration lists from 1867-1869 and says he has been a resident for 12 years in Texas, the County, and Precinct 11. [4]

The 1870 Census shows Stephen 59 living with the Vann Family, William 38, wife Mary Ann 34 (daughter of Stephen), daughter Josephine 5, Amber 21 black, (it is not listed, but is she help?), and Annie 1 also black. Amber's daughter? [5]

He passed away about 1870 at Mt. Pleasant, Titus, Texas.

Research question: 1. Were Catherine and Minerva related? 2. Who was the mother of Mary Ann and Sarah?
