Samuel Proper was born about 1758 in New York.
It is unconfirmed that Johan Jost Proper is his father, but it is likely - Samuel had a son named Johan Jost in 1781[1].
Taken from Find a Grave: In the year 1801, Samuel left his home in the Mohawk Valley in New York State with his three oldest sons - Joseph, Samuel and Andrew and went to Venango Co., Pa. This journey was made by wagon via Erie and Meadville. Samuel was the third to settle in Plum Township, Venango Co. Samuel's settlement was made on the Meadville and Titusville road at the crossing of Sugar Creek. The sons and Samuel commenced clearing part of the land, and planted a small amount of produce, and returned to the Mohawk Valley in NY and brought the rest of the family to PA. The German language was used exclusively by Samuel and his wife Catharine in the home, however, he spoke English when necessary, and in the transaction of business. In approximately 1805 or 1806 Samuel commenced to build a sawmill. This mill was run by waterpower and located on Proper Creek near the Diamond,Plum Township, Venango Co. He used the sawmill to saw lumber to put up buildings for himself and his sons. He was described by one descendant, as light complexioned, and weighing about 180 lbs. He was a very genteel and moral man,and considered his word as good as his bond. He was handy to make or build anything out of wood.He processed six farms with his sons.
