Biography

Susanna was not named in the will of her father, John Putnam, however her husband Isaac Burton was named as his son, and in the distribution of John's estate Susanna's brothers refer to Isaac Burton as their brother.[1]

Susannah d/o Jonathan or d/o John or are there two Susannah's?
Savage's genealogical dictionary does not list a Susannah as a child of Jonathan, but lists Susanna daughter of John born 11 April 1690.[2] Eben Putnam lists Susannah d/o Jonathan with a baptismal date 25 May 1690 but no birth date.[3] John Putnam (son of Nathaniel) had a daughter born 11 Apr 1690 according to the Salem vital records,[4] but Eben Putnam did not list her baptismal date.[3] The father's name is written Jno. Putnam in the baptismal records.[5] This abbreviation is used for both Jonathan and John at various times in the records. Was Savage wrong? Did Jonathan have a daughter Susannah? Do the birth and baptismal records belong to the daughter of John? Probate records for John[6] and Jonathan[7] indicate that John had a daughter who married Isaac Burton/Buxton, and that Jonathan did not have a daughter Susanna in 1737, when he wrote his will.
Conclusion: The wife of Isaac Burton was Susanna, daughter of John, and it is unlikely that Jonathan had a daughter Susannah.[8]

Susanna Putnam, daughter of John Putnam and his wife was born 11 April 1690 in Salem.[4] and baptized 25 May 1690 at the Salem Village Church.[5]
