Biography

John Quigley was born about 1825 in Ireland.[1] [2]

John married Bridget Ryan.[3]

John and Bridget were the parents of:

  1. Bridget Quigley, who was baptised on 22 February, 1850, in the Catholic parish of Kilcommon, in the diocese of Cashel and Emly, county Tipperary, Ireland; her sponsor was Anne Reily;[3]

In 1850, when John's daughter Bridget was baptised, the Quigley family were residents of Baurnadoomenee.[3] The townland of Baurnadomeeny (Bawnadomeeny, Barnadomine, Barnadominy) is in the civil parish of Abington, in the barony of Owney and Arra, in county Tipperary (Gaeilge: Barr na dTuaimíní, Mainistir Uaithne, Uaithne agus Ara, Tiobraid Árann).[4]

John Quigley, a farmer, was alive on 13 February 1872 when his daughter, Bridget who was residing at Baurnadomeeny, married Thomas Carey, the son of John Carey, in the presence of [Denis Ryan struck out] Philip Hartz and Judith Quigley; Bridget, Thomas and Judith made their mark "X" on the Marriage Registration.[5]

John's daughter Bridget immigrated to the colony of Queensland from Tipperary, Ireland; the records state she was aged 30 and her husband, Thomas Carey, was aged 35, when they sailed with their six children from London on 9 March 1886.[6] [7] When they left Ireland is unknown.

Research Notes

Research by MLH, June 2018

My mother, Marjorie Thompson née Carter, spent many hours listening to the stories of her Irish grandfather, James Carey, and his children. Towards the end of her life, when I began researching our family history, mum told me her Carey ancestors came from Baurnadomeeny, Tipperary, and before her great-grandmother, Bridget Carey née Quigley, left Ireland to start a new life in Queensland, she was given money by her father so she could return to Ireland if she was very unhappy in the colony. Bridget, a devout Catholic, had wanted to become a nun.
