Edward Count Raczynski was born on April 2, 1786, and died on January 20, 1845. He was the son of Philipp Count Raczynski and Michalina Countess Raczynska.
He studied at the University of Berlin and the University of Frankfurt.
Joining the Polish Army in 1806, he served in the honor guard of the Emperor Napoleon I and left the Polish Army in 1810, settling on his estate at Rogalin. He visited Greece, Lapland, Sweden and Turkey from 1813 to 1814, publishing his diary of the journey.
Returning to Poland, he engaged in cultural, political and scientific activities and editing numerous books, the most noted of which are The Cabinet of Polish Medals (1838-43) and Memories of Wielkopolska (1842).
He also funded the Raczynski Library, the oldest public library and the construction of a water supply network for Posen. He also established an agricultural school in Jeżewo and renovated the castle in Będzin, as well as improvements at Rogalin.
He also contributed to the construction of the chapel-mausoleum of the first Polish rulers in the cathedral in Posen, funding bronze statues of Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave, and, he received honorary citizenship in 1834.
He committed suicide.
