  • His father's will in which Charles, as the oldest son, inherits a unit comprising two tennanted semi-detached houses in Colchester, Essex. His father had been born in Colchester and spent his early career there, but at some stage had been posted, by the excise service for which he worked, to Lewes in Sussex, where he lived the later years of his career. The bequest was conditional on the beneficiary using the rental income to pay an annuity to Anne, the testator's widow, "for and during the term of her natural life". the amount being divided into four annual payments payable on the usual quarter days, being specified as the days of Saint John the Baptist, Saint Michael the Archangel, the nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
