John Turton Randall, son of Sidney Randall and Hannah Cawley, was born March 23, 1905 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England. [1]

John married Doris Duckworth about July 1928 in the Warrington district of Lancashire. [3]

In the 1939 register John (age 34), Research Physicist, was the married head of household at 80, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.[4]

In 1940, in partnership with Henry Boot, Randall invented the cavity magnetron, which was instrumental in winning World War II for the Allies. David Zimmerman, Professor of Military History at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, wrote: "The magnetron remains the essential radio tube for shortwave radio signals of all types. ... It not only changed the course of the war by allowing us to develop airborne radar systems, it remains the key piece of technology that lies at the heart of your microwave oven today. The cavity magnetron's invention changed the world." [5]

in the 1950s, at King's College, London Randall was the director of the Biophysics Research Unit. It was with his leadership that James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins made their breakthrough discovery elucidating the structure of DNA. [6]

John (age 79) died June 16, 1984. [7]
