Biography

Dorothy Lee Rankin was born in 1912, the daughter of Alexander Martin Rankin and Lena Mae Blair. Dorothy is mentioned in the 1986 obituary of her brother Alexander Rankin, Jr. Note: visit the link and click on SOURCES to view this record. ^[1]

In 1920, the Rankin family lived at 329 N. Main St., High Point, Guilford, North Carolina. All members of the household were born in NC, as were their parents. The household included Alexander M. Rankin, 62, a coffin manufacturer; his wife, Lena 42; their children, Margaret L., 20, in school; Alexander M., Jr., 17, in school; Dorothy L., 7, in school; and Robert, 2; also living with them were Lena’s mother and sister, Martha E. Blair, 63, a widow; and Miss Florence E. Blair, 43, a music teacher. ^[2] Note: this house no longer stands.

In 1930, the Rankin family lived at 503 N. Main St., High Point, Guilford, North Carolina. The family included Alexander M. Rankin, 65?; his wife Lena B., 46?; their children, Dorothy L., 17; Robert B., 12; and Jeanne B., 9. ^[3]Note: this house no longer stands.

Dorothy Rankin and Alvin J. De Vries were married on 6 March 1948 in High Point, Guilford, North Carolina. Dorothy was the daughter of Alexander M. Rankin (deceased) and Lena B. Rankin. Wilson O. Weldon, a Methodist minister, officiated. Witnesses were Margaret R. Farrar, Winter Park, FL; and Robert B. Rankin, High Point, NC. ^[4]

They were divorced on 10 July 1952, in Guilford County, North Carolina.^[5]

Dorothy is mentioned in the obituary of her brother, Robert Blair Rankin, who died, aged 88, on 10 April 2006 in High Point, North Carolina. ^[6]

Dorothy Lee “Dot” Rankin, 1912-2003, was born and died in High Point, Guilford, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Alexander M. Rankin and Lena Blair. Dot attended Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD, and earned a post-graduate degree from Emerson College, Boston. She worked as a buyer for RH Stearne & Company, Boston. In 1949, Dot returned to High Point, NC, and worked for Colliver Ellis Company. She died, aged 91, at High Point Regional Hospital in 2003. Dot was survived by a sister, Mrs. Jeanne Pleasants, and a brother, Robert B. Rankin. She is buried with her father and three of her siblings at Oakwood Cemetery, High Point, North Carolina. ^[7]
