Maud was born about 1507, in Gloucestershire, the daughter of John Rastall (1482-1534) and his wife Margaret. She was described in the Visitation of Gloucester as Matilda, daughter of ?, widow of Henry Marmion, wife of Thomas Lane. [1]
Maud was a beneficiary in the 1533 will of her father John. [2]
Marriages
She married firstly Henry Marmion, gentleman and alderman of Gloucester, and they had two children; [3]
Thomas Marmion Esq. c.1538-1580
Isabel c.1540
Henry Marmion died c.1542. She was named in his will. [4]
She married secondly Thomas Lane, recorder of Gloucester. They had a son, William Lane, c. 1544-1620. Thomas Lane died c.1544. [5] Maud was named in Thomas's will of 1544. [6]
She married thirdly, Richard Pate, MP., who founded a school in 1574 which later became Pate's Grammar School.[5]
She was named in the 1588 will of her third husband Richard Pate, so was still living until at least that time. [7]
Research Notes
In the contemporary references of her husbands' wills, she is always referred to as Maud. She is, however, called Matilda in the 1628 Visitation of Gloucester which was compiled at a later date.
