Biography

William Reed was supposedly born in Scotland, probably around 1685. [1]

William had 5 children, 1 or more may have been with a first wife. After his death, his widow, Dorothy Letson or Leston, born in Ireland, brought the children to settle in Delaware around 1721.

Research Notes

Thomas Reed probably left the Scottish lowlands to settle in the Ulster Plantations. Limited rights of Presbyterians under the Catholic Charles II inspired many Scots-Irish to flee to the American colonies and Canada in the late 1600s and early 1700s. Others were transported as convicts or indentured servants, and it is possible one of the 5 children originally arrived under these circumstances, later urging the rest of the family to follow.
