Maria was born in 1792, one of many children of Jean Charles Renaud and Marie Madeleine Bertrand. In January 1812, at age 21, she married Jean Baptiste Bernard. Tragedy hit the following September. She gave birth to their only child, who was stillborn, and died 8 days later.
(On) the second of December eighteen-hundred and twelve in the cemetery of this church were made the prayers of the Church for the sepultures of Marie Louise Reneau, wife of Jean Baptiste Bernard -- (she being) deceased on the twenty-second of September last, aged twenty-two years -- and of her child born and ONDOYÉ by myself and dying on the fourteenth and interred by the undersigned Louis Gendron on the fifteenth of the same month September last. Present were the above-named Louis Gendron, and Jean Baptiste Bernard her husband, and Jean Baptiste Bernard her father-in-law -- who do not know how to sign -- and many others.
