James Thomas Reynolds was born on 10 May 1852 in Kentucky. His father likely died when James was about five years old, and he grew up in the home of his mother and stepfather, Jeremiah Shy.[1][2]
James married Mary Frances May about 1875, and they had four children together.

After his wife's death, James lived with his sons in Oakview, Boyd County, Kentucky. He was a preacher.[3][4]
He died on 22 Mar 1911 and was buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.[5][6]
