Biography

Sidney Margaret Reynolds was born in about 1841 in Shelby County, Illinois, to Joel Reynolds and Pernicia Scroggins. In 1850, she was living in Sand Creek, Shelby County, Illinois, with her parents and seven brothers and sisters. ^[1] In 1854, all the children (nine by then) were orphaned when Joel died in November and Pernicia died in December. ^[2] The minor children were sent to various guardians. John Goode, who was married to Pernicia's sister Narcissus (Ellen) Scroggins, was appointed guardian to Margaret, who was called Sidney Margaret at the time.^[3]

By 1860, Margaret was no longer a minor and was living in Shelby County as a "Domestique" in the household of the Edward Collings family.^[4] The following year, Margaret married widower John B. Bowman in Shelby County.^[5]Margaret was widowed with two daughters on 1 May 1869 when John died in Shelby County. ^[6]

In 1870, Margaret was running a rooming house in Windsor, Shelby County, living with her daughters, her stepson David Bowman, and three adult male boarders. The house was valued at $2000.^[7]In 1876, Margaret married John R. Davis in Shelby County.^[8] In 1879, Margaret gave birth to a son, Arthur Davis. ^[9] In April 1880, she died of pneumonia.^[10]
