Edward joined the Royal Navy in 1832. He was a mate on board the HMS Did in 1842 in the First Opium War. He was Commander of a flotilla of boats during the Second Anglo-Burmese War. He was Commander of HMS Prometheus in 1854. He was Captain of the HMS Leander during the Crimean War in 1855. He was aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria from 1869 to 1873. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1873 and was Second-in-Command of the Mediterranean Fleet in 1875, Admiral Superintendent of Malta Dockyard in 1876, and Vice Admiral in 1878. He was Commander-in-Chief, the Nore, from 1882 to 1884, and was promoted to Admiral three days after he retired. During his retirement he was Deputy Lieutenant of Kent.[23][24][25][26]
