Edward Bridges Rice was born on 30 Oct 1819 in Godmersham, Kent, England to parents Edward Rice and Elizabeth Knight. He was baptised on 23 November 1819 in Godmersham, Kent, England.^[1][2][3]

On 7 Apr 1861 Edward was age 41 and a Captain in the Royal Navy. He was at sea on a vessel.^[4]

Edward (full age) Captain R.N., son of Edward Royds Rice, married Cecilia Caroline Vernon Harcourt, daughter of William Vernon Harcourt, a clergyman, on the 18th February 1864 in Nuneham Courtenay, Oxfordshire, England. The witnesses were William V. Harcourt, John Morland Rice, Matilda M. Vernon Harcourt.^[5][6][7]

In 1871 Edward (age 51) was the head of household in Portsea, Hampshire, England. His 6-year-old son Henry lived with him, and he had four servants. His wife was living with her brother Edward and others of her family in a large household at Nuneham House in Oxfordshire.^[8][9]

In 1881 Edward was age 61 and Vice Admiral Royal Navy and J.P. He was living with his wife Cecilia and son Henry in Hampton Hill, Droxford, Hampshire, England.^[10][11]

In 1891 Edward was age 71 and living with his wife and son in Tilmanstone, Nonington, Kent, England. He was an Admiral and J.P.^[12][13]

In 1901 Edward was age 81 and living with his wife in Tilmanstone, Kent, England. He was a retired Admiral.^[14]

Edward died at age 83 on the 30th October 1902 and was buried in Saint Andrew 's Churchyard, Tilmanstone, Dover, Kent, England.^[15][16]

Edward joined the Royal Navy in 1832. He was a mate on board the HMS Did in 1842 in the First Opium War. He was Commander of a flotilla of boats during the Second Anglo-Burmese War. He was Commander of HMS Prometheus in 1854. He was Captain of the HMS Leander during the Crimean War in 1855. He was aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria from 1869 to 1873. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1873 and was Second-in-Command of the Mediterranean Fleet in 1875, Admiral Superintendent of Malta Dockyard in 1876, and Vice Admiral in 1878. He was Commander-in-Chief, the Nore, from 1882 to 1884, and was promoted to Admiral three days after he retired. During his retirement he was Deputy Lieutenant of Kent.^{[23][24][25][26]}
