Death Notice RICHARDS. — On the 17th January, at Kingscote, K.I., suddenly, George Rich ards, dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth Richards, aged 87 years. An old colonist, born at Penzance, Cornwall, and arriving in Australia in the ship Java in 1834. [1840] He leaves a widow, 3 sons (Messrs H. M. Richards, Angaston and Fred Richards, Barunga North), one daughter {Mrs T Keley, Kingscote), a brother (Mr G. W. Artical in Trove George Richards Hale and Hearty at Eighty Two A new arrival at Kingscote is Mr Geo. Ricbards who, with Mrs Richards, is, at the age of 82, making a new home for himself in this part of the world. The veteran came out to South Australia in the ship Java in 1839-1840, landing at Holdfast Bay and camping under the old gum tree. r * printing trade, being in the employ of Mr T, Brock, afterwards well-known as a member of the Stuart exploring party. He was on the Gawler River station for a number of years and in 1854 engaged with Messrs Christian and Cave with whom be served for 18 years. Subsequently he entered the service of Mr R, Flicker, of Port Adelaide for whom he has worked as a carrier for a quarter of a century. Mr Richards' health is good, and at the youthful age of four score and two, not. out, he is looking forward to a lengthy innings on Kangaroo Island. . He has four children living, three sons and one daughter (Mrs T. Keley, of Kingscote). We understand that the sturdy old pioneer, who is very .popular, received a hearty send off on leaving Port Adelaide.

By the death of Mr George Richards, at the age of 87 years, at Kingscote, on Tuesday last, another name was removed from the list of pioneer colonists. The late Mr Richards came to the state in the ship Java in February, 1840 and landed at holdfast Bay, where he camped near the Old Gumtree. He spent the last few years of his life at Kingscote with a married daughter (Mrs T Keely), but was better known at Port Adelaide, where he lived for a number of years. He was in the employ of Mr Fricker, shipping agent for about 30 years. Mr Richards often boasted that he had never purchased anything during his life without having paid “spot cash” for it.
