Biography

1863: BIRTH: NZBDM 1863/18583

Andrew was b. 1863 in Oamaru, the 3rd son of Andrew and Janet (Arundel). Sometime in the 1890's he moved to the Hawkes Bay area, whether this was to work for relatives living in the area, I havent found any evidence yet. He married Mary Jane McJurey 1894, and they had 4 children. I know from a previous son's data, he was in the Wellington area abt 1907. He worked as a nightwatchman/greaser for Dimock's Bacon factory, where unfortunately he met with a fatal accident. Andrew was 47 yrs old when he died leaving a wife and 4 children.

Evening Post Tues 26th July 1910 SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT NGAHAURANGA At an early hour this morning Andrew Riddell, a married man, whose family resides at Jackson Street, Petone, was seriously injured at Dimock's Bacon Factory at Ngahauranga. At half past 1 o'clock this morning, Riddle and another man were engaged in oiling the bearings of the overhead machinery. Riddle lost his balance, and fell head downward to the concrete floor, 20 or 30ft below, fracturing his skull and breaking an arm and several ribs. He was picked up in an unconscious state and after he had been attended to by Dr. Henry, he was brought into hospital, where he lies in a critical condition. Riddell is 48 years of age, and has been in the employ of Messrs Dimock and Company for a considerable time.

Evening Post, Fri. 29 July 1910 ACCIDENT RESULTS FATALLY Andrew Riddell, aged 48, who slipped while engaged in oiling an overhead shaft in Dimock and Co's Bacon factory at Ngahauranga at 1.30 a.m. on Tuesday last, and fell head downward to the concrete floor, died in the hospital at 3. o'clock this morning. his skull was fractured and one of his arms and several ribs were broken. The deceased has left a widow and family at Petone.

Evening Post. Sat 30 July 1910 NGAHAURANGA ACCIDENT - THE INQUEST The City Coroner, Mr. W. R. Haseldon, held an inquest on the body of Andrew Riddell, who died in the hospital yesterday morning as the result of injuries sustained by a fall at Dimock and Company's bacon factory at Ngahauranga, at 1.30am on Tuesday last. Deceased, a married man with a wife and four children, was admitted to the hospital suffering from a fracture of the base of his skull, a broken arm, and several broken ribs. He never really regained total consciousness, and died as stated. Fred. Jms. Bursell, a cleaner, who was on shift with the deceased on the night of the accident, stated that about 1.am. the bearings began to run hot. Riddell came up to look at them, and while leaning forward to feel them, overbalanced in some way, and fell to the floor, a distance of 17ft 6in. Witness could not account for deceased falling, unless his hand slipped off an oiled surface. Riddell was a teatotaller. Questioned as to certain injuries deceased recieved, witness thought it possible that he may have struck bearings as he fell. In reply to Mr. D. M. Findlay, who appeared for the relatives of the deceased, W. W. Munroe, engineer at Dimock's, said that the inspector had called since the accident, and suggested a platform for safety round the bearings. Personally, he thought such a thing advisable. Deceased was about 47 years of age. His eldest child is a son aged 18. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

FUNERAL NOTICE The friends of the late ANDREW RIDDELL are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, which will leave his late residence, 18 Nelson Street, Petone, on Sunday, July 31st 1910, at 2 pm, for the Taita Cemetery. R.H. PARRANT & CO., Undertakers, 45 Fitzherbert Street, Petone.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Andrew by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Andrew:
