Research notes

On film #887395 there is recorded the christening of James REDELL on 9 August 1784 in Brandon, England with father William REDELL and Sarah REDELL. There is also a James REDELL with the same parents christened on 17 Dec 1782 film #887394.

Came out on the 'Hebe'. Convict records say he was convicted 14 Mar 1820 at the Cambridge Assizes for stealing a horse. The story goes that he borrowed the horse from his boss to ride and get the doctor for his wife who was having difficulties in childbirth and the horse died on the way. He possibly rode the horse too hard having already lost one baby in childbirth and the risk of losing another and his wife. He stood 5'4" tall, was 35 years old, and was a baker in Brandon with dark sallow complexion and brown hair and hazel eyes. He was transported on the Hebe assigned to baker 29 Nov 1822.

Recorded in the Colonial Secretary Index 1788-1825. RIDDLE, James - 1821 Sep 8 - Stationary servant. On list of all persons victualled from H.M. Magazines (Reel 6016; 4/5781 p.99).

Officiator at James' funeral was Robt. Forrest, Off'g Minister of the Church of England, Parish of Saint John, Parramatta, in the County of Cumberland. It is understood that James was one of few ex-convicts who were permitted a Church burial.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
